Higher Study in Cyprus

Cyprus is a beautiful island in the northeastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Throughout the centuries, Cyprus has been a meeting place of civilizations and cultures. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean with a population of approximately 700,000. The island has superb mountain scenery, forests, fascinating coastlines and beaches, and a rich historical and archaeological heritage bearing witness to its long and diverse history.

In May 2004, Cyprus has joined the European Union and became its easternmost and southernmost outpost.

Climate

Cyprus enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate with long dry summers from mid-May to mid-October and abundant sunshine throughout the year. Variations in temperature and rainfall are governed by altitude and, to a lesser extent, distance from the coast. The marvelous climate of the island offers endless opportunities to nature lovers.

 

Economy

The country’s economy is booming and over the last few years, Cyprus has emerged as one of the leading business and financial centers in the region. Various sectors of the economy like tourism, banking, insurance and telecommunications provide the economy with a leading edge. In January 2008, Cyprus will join the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and hence the Euro (€) will be the monetary unit in use.

 

Language

The official languages of the Constitution of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish, but English is widely spoken. English is also the language of instruction in the Private Institutions of Tertiary Education for the vast majority of their programs of study.

Requirements for Bachelor’s Program

  1. Academic
  2. At least 12 years of education (HSC equivalent).
  3. Language Proficiency
  4. It is not mandatory for the students to complete the TOEFL, GRE, SAT, IELTS or GMAT but good score in this exam will added some value to the students and it will be easy for those students to get scholarship.
  5. Course Length
  6. Diploma Courses: Approx. 2 years of full time study.
  7. Bachelor’s Degree: Approx. 4 years of full time study.

Requirements for Master’s Program

  1. Academic
  2. At least 16 years of education.
  3. Language Proficiency
  4. It is not mandatory for the students to complete the TOEFL, GRE, SAT, IELTS or GMAT but good score in this exam will added some value to the students and it will be easy for those students to get scholarship.
  5. Course Length
  6. Master’s Degree: Approx. 18 Months to 24 Months (depends on subject).
  7. PhD Degree program: Approx. 3 to 6 years.

 

Expenses

  1. Tuition Fees in € Euro
  2. It depends on universities. At most public universities it is € 3,000 to € 3,200 per year. In private colleges and universities it is about € 4,000 per year.
  3. You must not expect financial aid for undergraduate studies mostly.
  4. At graduate level (masters, doctorate) there are more opportunities for financial aid from both public and private universities.
  5. Living & Other Expense:

For Food, cloth, transport, travel, telephone & incidental cost approximately € 300 to € 350 per year.

  2. The cost of medical insurance is around € 80 to € 100 per year for one person including doctor’s visit, medication, hospitalization, and surgery.

How to Apply to the University

  1. Check with the departments to see if there is a closing date for your application.
  2. You should write directly to the Institution’s Admission Office for detailed application information and forms.
  3. You can also download application form from university website.
  4. Some universities have an on-line application facility.
  5. Admission Office will inform you about the documentation, translation, and visa requirements.
  6. You should start at least one year in advance to compile the necessary information and documentation.

 

 

Supporting Documents

  1. Completed Application Form.
  2. Money order/Application fee Documents.
  3. Official English version of all educational documents including marks sheets.
  4. Transcripts must be certified only by the Ministry of Education or the issuing institution where you studied.
  5. School/College leaving certificate.
  6. One or more letters of recommendation.
  7. Score report of SAT, GRE, GMAT (based on university requirements) etc.
  8. Letter of financial responsibility directly from your sponsor.
  9. Photocopy of your passport.
  10. 5 (Five) copy of Passport Size Photo.
  11. Students must have to ensure their medical test like: TB, X-Ray, and Hepatitis B etc.

 

Other Information

  1. Accommodation
  2. You can choose Home stay, Hostels & guesthouses, Share accommodation, Rental accommodation, Boarding schools, University accommodation etc.
  3. Working Facility
  4. For first six months you do not get the permission to work but after that you will get work permit.
  5. Your visa does not allow you to work unless you are employed in an on-campus job or approved by the university.
  6. On-campus jobs do not provide enough funds to cover your tuition or living expenses.
  7. Type of Jobs for the Students
  8. Students at the school can usually find jobs like cleaning the grounds and buildings, guarding buildings at night, or working in the cafeteria, library, or offices.
  9. Sometimes students can baby-sit, perform house-cleaning or yard-work chores arranged through the school, camp counselor, Bartending/waiting tables, Computing, Trades, Fruit Picking, Poultry processing, Sewing machine operator, Farm laborer, Laundry worker.
  10. Average wages: Between € 8 to € 20 per hour.
  11. Credit Transfer Facility
  12. Students may apply for credit transfer program at undergraduate or postgraduate level in Cyprus as well as the countries of EU.
  13. The maximum amount of credit that may be granted normally is not greater than 50% of the course.
  14. Most of the universities consider minimum “B” grade for acceptance.
  15. You have to submit the following documents to your target university:
  16. Your application form for the Undergraduate or Postgraduate coursework program.
  17. Official copies of your academic transcript.
  18. Also include an official letter from head of the school/department of your university, from where you have already completed the courses.
  19. Detailed course outlines (Official Copy) including subject descriptions, methods of teaching and assessment, reading lists, number of hours of teaching etc.
